A Sewing Machine - Was it Worth It?
71
It has been years since I owned a sewing machine and I mean years. The last time I owned one was in 1990 or 1991. The sewing machine I did own was an old clunker, one that was handed down from my grandmother. Believe me it was old. It was also heavy too. I remember that when I wanted to sew something I would wait until I had a bunch of projects that I wanted to do and then sew them all at once.
About a week ago, my husband wanted to redo the inside of our camping trailer. He wanted to reupholster the cushions. We went and purchased the fabric and then I started sewing the cushions by hand. This was taking way too long. I had to find a better way. I just had to.
I know, I could get myself a sewing machine. I debated this over in my mind by stitch by stitch on the cushion, I knew I had to get one. I would never have these cushions sewn up by the time camping season was here.
My husband thought that instead of getting a sewing machine that we could outsource the work to a seamstress that he knew. I thought about that and told him that once we paid for someone to do the work, we could have used that money and purchased our own sewing machine.
My husband also thought that we could borrow a sewing machine from someone. I explained to him that sure we could but if we broke it, we are responsible for it. I don't like borrowing things from people because something could always happen to it. I also explained to him that if we did borrow one and it did get broken, we would have to replace it and we'd still be without our cushions being finished. I think I had no choice here but to get my own sewing machine.
Stitch by stitch I thought of a new sewing machine. I was actually a little bit scared of buying a new sewing machine. I thought back to that old clunker I used to have. I broke so many needles with that thing, had so many stitches bundle up together under the bobbin. It was not fun at all to sew with. I hoped that a new machine would not do the same thing.
I searched on the internet at prices of sewing machines. I had decided I would get one from Walmart. Yeah, I know what you are thinking. I'm probably going to end up with something that I won't be able to use after the first few uses. However, I love Walmart's prices and my budget was unfortunately just a Walmart budget. The one I was looking at online was under $100.
The other day, I went to Walmart and checked out the sewing machines. I saw one that was only $80. It was a Singer. Okay, I thought I am impressed. I also saw the one I was looking at online. If only I could compare these two, I thought to myself. Oh well, I have to pick one. I then saw a little box with a check mark on the front of the box on the one for $80. It said consumer approved. Okay, that's it. That is the one I am getting.
I took my new sewing machine home. Like I said it is a Singer. It was fairly light and it was very easy to setup. I was sewing my cushions within an hour. I was very impressed with it.
I finished that sewing project and I thought to myself that the sewing machine has indeed paid for itself already, just with that one project. I'm very pleased with my purchase.

Interesting...good stuff!
I'd spruce it up, perhaps with a video related to sewing? Maybe embolden the text here, use italics there...good job, keep it up!
I need to get a new machine. I had one but it got stolen (along with everything else that we own). Not sure if I'm going to get a Singer though because the Sears people told me that the other brand they sell (can't remember which) is much better. 'Course it's also $200 more expensive (go figure).
Thanks, dwilliamson!
My mother in law has had her Singer sewing machine for years. They're really decent little machines. Glad to hear that you're happy with your purchase.

Good for you! We had an old Singer treadle machine that I loved, but electric machines sure are convenient.
