Camping for Free in BC
68
There is a phenomenon in BC, Canada that not a lot of people know about. You can go camping for free in BC. You read that right. Camping for free.
There are many forest service roads throughout British Columbia, Canada. Some of these forest service roads were old logging roads that the province has fixed up. Most of the forest service road campsites are free or next to free and some of them you can overnight camp at. Some of them have campsites and at the campsites there are usually picnic tables. There are also outhouses at most of them. Now, you won't get showers or electricity at these sites but what do you expect for free.
Most of the forest service roads are located at a lake. There are signs explaining what you can or cannot do at these sites. For instance, at Pass Lake, you have to pack your own garbage back out with you and you can only fish with flies. Some of the camp lakes you can't bring a boat into and some of them you can't have a campfire at. You just have to read the signs and follow the directions.
The forest service roads allow us citizens of British Columbia to enjoy the wilderness without costing a fortune. Being from Ontario, originally, it takes sometime to get used to the idea that you can actually camp for free. Everything in Ontario costs money, everything and it sure is a nice change to actually get something for absolutely free.

Hi, I love British Columbia and LOVE camping but I haven't done it in many years. Friends of mine and I are going camping this weekend near Harrison so that should be fun.
My question is - where can one go camping for free in BC without getting busted for pitching a tent on private property, i.e. not in a provincial park or designated campsite - just out in the wilderness. One day I'd just like to pack my tent and go... and see where I end up. Also, how do you keep bears from ruining your campsite? Are those loud airhorns legal?
Also, if I take a logging road into the bushes to find a secluded place to camp, I hear some of those logging trucks are pretty relentless at not letting you pass. Getting hit by a 20-ton logging truck is not my idea of a 'nice trip'.
Thanks for any info.

Hi there,
Could you please tell me if Tamarack Lake is in the East Kootenay, B.C.
Also, is there any other free camping in the Kamloops area.
