Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo Biloba, an alternative medicine, is an extract from the ginkgo tree which was first found in Eastern China. The ginkgo tree is a deciduous conifer. A deciduous conifer provides a stunning autumn display. The leaves on a ginkgo tree turn golden yellow in autumn. They fall off the tree all at once. They are fan-like and have veins radiating from the stem. Ginkgo biloba is the oldest known species of tree estimated to be over 200 million years old.

The ginkgo biloba can grow to be as tall as 125 feet. It is a very hardy tree. The ginkgo biloba produces a plum shaped fruit. It is the seeds from this fruit that hold its health benefits. The pulp of the fruit, however, is poisonous. It must be noted that there have been some reports though of poisoning from the seeds themselves too. Recently, the leaves of the ginkgo biloba have been found to have healing properties.

Ginkgo biloba can be used as a treatment for asthma and respiratory problems. It has also been used to increase blood flow to the brain and brain cells and it is also known to be used in the treatment of diarrhea. There is some evidence that ginkgo biloba will increase your memory and therefore some say it is good for Alzheimer's patients.

It is always best to consult a physician before taking any kind of medication, including alternative medications. Your physician will inform you as to whether or not you would benefit from taking ginkgo biloba.
