Grandma's Pot Roast

I remember going to visit my grandparents at their cottage in Bobcaygeon, Ontario. I think I would have been about ten years old at the time. I always loved visiting them because Grandma was always cooking something good to eat.

I can remember the smell of pot roast on a cool Saturday afternoon. The aroma wafted through the whole cottage and it smelled so good. I can remember my tummy growling not just because it was hungry but because I knew I was going to taste Grandma's pot roast real soon.

Grandma would cook her pot roast in a big roasting pan with some onions and salt and pepper. She would peel carrots and potatoes and have them simmering on the burners. Sometimes she would just put the carrots and potatoes in with the roast but we all seemed to really like her mashed potatoes. They were so creamy and so good!

I can remember sitting at the big dinner table with family members, helping ourselves to big scoops of mashed potatoes, spoons full of carrots and a big slice of roast each. Then Grandpa would pass the gravy bowl around and we'd each pour generous amounts of rich dark gravy on our plates.

Since becoming an adult, I have tried many times to cook a pot roast like Grandma. However, they just never seem to turn out the way hers did. I don't know what else Grandma put in that pot roast but she definitely had a secret recipe. I think the secret to her recipe was the love she put in each and every meal that she prepared and a special dose of love went into each and every pot roast. Nobody can cook a pot roast like Grandma can.

I never had a grandmother in my life, but I feel the same way about my mom's pot roast. I think you are right about love being the main ingredient.

I don't have a mom anymore. She died about ten years ago. I do have my Grandma though. She is going to be 97 years old this year.

Does this also apply to brisket & mashed potatoes?

Thanks for your comment, Koby. Believe it or not I've never had brisket and mashed potatoes but it does sound good!!!
