Limerick Day

Did you know that today is Limerick Day? Being a writer, you would think I knew this. However, I'm sorry to say I didn't know a thing about it. However, now that I do know about Limerick Day, I wanted to pass it on to you.

Limerick Day is the celebration of the birthdate of an English writer, Edward Lear. Edward Lear wrote limericks. In a limerick the first two lines ryhme with the 5th line and then the 3rd and 4th lines rhymed as well.

There are several different kinds of rhymes that can be used in poems. The limerick is just one such kind. I think it is fun to come up with rhymes and my first attempt at a limerick is as follows:

There once was a day called Limerick Day
"What was that?" I heard you say
You know, the celebration of a time
when the top two lines rhyme
with the 5th before it's time to play

It is pretty easy to get the first two lines to rhyme and the 3rd and 4th lines to rhyme but I found it very difficult to get the last line to rhyme with the first two lines and still have the limerick make sense.

Here is another limerick I just wrote:

I once had a dog named Ice
he was very, very nice
Now Ice was so gentle
But he didn't not eat his lentil
and he definitely did not like rice

That one seemed to go together a bit easier although it turned out to be fairly silly. But that is the good thing about limericks and rhymes. They are meant to be silly. They are meant to make you laugh and smile.

Here is another limerick that I just wrote. It seemed to go together quite well.

I once baked a chocolate cake
But I dropped it into a lake
I pulled it out wet and soggy
The sky turned quite foggy
I went home and got out my rake

Now, in all honesty there really wasn't much thought put into these limericks I just wrote and it only took a minute or two to write each one. However, it does show how easy it is to write a limerick. It also shows how fun it can be too. Writing a limerick is just another form of writing poetry.

Let's all write a limerick or two today and show that we care about Limerick Day.

Teresa (from Belfast) McGurk

Avoids all real semblance of work:

she sits by the river

and poisons her liver

for drinking's one thing she won't shirk.

(actually, I don't drink -- anymore.)

No: thank YOU for pointing it out;

I feel like an ignorant lout --

I'd forgotten the date

but can now celebrate--

thanks to your removing the doubt.

i do have some comments to make,

you really should DO take a break

cause your limmericks dont follow the rythem,

and the limmerick pace is not with them,

and thats why those writings are fake!

it wasnt really rudeless to say that,

i know im not perfect like you lad,

however i do,

the rythems for you,

helping you while you are mad!

i know my english is crappy,

thats why i can write this so happy,

its meant really nice,

and you're really wise,

thats why i know you wont be unhappy!

i really need to quit with those writing,

going on like this is just frightning,

i hope you dont mind,

cause i am really kind,

i really need some better sighting!

(ok tell me, how bad is my english?? though your rythem is really bad with the limericks:P and i know its rude how i said it but i cant say it otherwise while using limmericks xD and still making em make sense:P and besides, youll understand... im 18 and not english so i think i said it clearly enough for what im used to xD oohw and mine are written in 2 or 3 mins aswell xD byebye!!)

well i meant you should take a break to try to make some WITH the lymmeric rythem:P cause thats a MUST for lymmerics, actually it means your not writing lymmerics but just little rhymes... cause theres more then one thing a lymmerick should have :P

aabba rhyme,

special rythem (aabba in lenght, like short, short, long, long, short) and even better would be to make one with (random numbers used now) 5 syllabes, 5 syllabes, 10 syllabes, 10 syllabes 5 syllabes (then you get the lymmerick rhythem)

try to make the sentences that rhyme to have the same length or almost the same legth like me and Teresa McGurk showed :D

(i do NOT want to be rude, i try to be helpfull :D)

greetings :D

Im trying to help witht the rythem for you (11)

though my english is bad yeah that is really true (12)

i played too much WoW (5) (WoW = world of warcraft)

so i am tired now (6)

so in dutch we would say: ik ben moe (9) (ik ben moe = i am tired and "moe" if prenouced in dutch rhymes on true and you)
