Memories are Made of This
"Memories are Made of This" is actually a song by Dean Martin. The song talks about grief, joy, dreams, lovers, children, blessings and generosity.
Grief seems to cause a lot of the unpleasant memories that we may have. My mother passed away on July 31, 2001 and I am still grief-stricken by her death. I will never get over my Mother dying. I can't look at her picture without feeling sadness.
Joy causes pleasant memories. The joy of seeing a brand new baby for the first time. The joy of holding that baby in your arms and watching them smile up at you. The joy watching that child grow up and make something of themselves.
Dreams can cause unpleasant and pleasant memories, depending on what you are dreaming about. If you are having a nightmare that is going to cause unpleasant memories. If you are dreaming of your life in the future such as building your retirement home on a lake in the mountains, then you are going to have pleasant memories.
Lovers seem to cause a lot of unpleasant memories for many people unless the lover was that someone special that you just can't get out of your head no matter what. Lovers and memories go hand-in-hand. A lot of people remember all the details of their first love because it was innocent and special.
Children can cause a lot of pleasant memories. Parents tend to remember the first time their child walked, the first words they spoke, the first tooth falling out. Children are innocent and sweet and I think because of their innocence and sweetness that is why we remember them the way we do.
Blessings are wonderful memories. Blessings like being thankful for what you have instead of always wanting more. Blessings like having children that love and respect you for what you are. Blessings like having a roof over our head and a fridge full of food in these tough economic times. These blessings we will remember in times of troubles.
Generosity of others towards us and us towards others can be the most rewarding of memories. Helping an elderly woman put the groceries in the trunk of her car, picking up something that someone dropped are very rewarding. Having someone else look after you while you are ill or having someone pick up something that you dropped are very rewarding memories as well.
Memories shape our souls. They shape the human being that we are today and tomorrow. Unpleasant memories make us stronger and more careful and pleasant memories bring up happiness.
