Repairs to a Convertible

I have an older car, a 1991 Pontiac Sunbird convertible. It maybe an older car but it is still a pretty awesome car to me. I love it and even my dog, Ice, loves it. Sometimes I have to make a beer run for my hubby. I take my dog with me whenever I go for a drive. When I go to the beer store, guys come out and say "Oh I like your dog and oh I like your car." and I'm thinking you guys are full of it cause I know what you really like. Anyway, it is all good for my ego.

So my car is old, like I said and therefore it had some tears in the canvas and the plastic for the back window was coming out. Also, the seams were starting to unravel. What that all means is, I have a convertible but couldn't put the top down because it would end up in worse condition than it is now.

I took some of my hubby's fishing line and a large sewing needle one day last fall and I sewed up the one side of the seam on the back window. At that time that was pretty much all that was wrong with it. That actually worked awesome. I could use my convertible again.

Now, truth be told, I don't actually like the convertible. I have real long hair and hate it when it flies into my face. However, I must admit, on a real hot day, it does feel good and it is a good way to cool down.

So, I let my hubby take the convertible to work with him one day and he put the top down. When he came back home, the other side of the stitching had come apart and the plastic window on the back was coming off.

I went to a canvas shop here in town and showed the guy the condition of the roof. I showed him what I had done to the roof the year before with the fishing line. He told me to either hand over $1200 or go home with a can of beer and the fishing line and repair it myself.

Now, I wish I had $1200 in my bank account but I don't and I'm not sure what he meant by the can of beer, but I did go home and repair it. I got out the fishing line and my hubby picked up some glue used for mending leather and upholstery. It is totally amazing because I was able to fix the whole thing myself. Now, it doesn't quite look as good as a new $1200 top would but hey, it will do.

As for that can of beer, I still don't know what I was supposed to do with it but my hubby did enjoy it while I was busy working away.

Hey lady:) I like the work that you did to your convertible top too! I actually have an 04 Suzuki Vitara that is a convertible top too. The stitching came loose around the back glass and from putting it down wore it out. But nothing that fishing twine and a needle didn't fix. I have to say it works for me. It only costs me $400 to fix the top but when you have to improvise, that's what you gotta do! Great job and tip. I would recommend this technique for all convertible top owners and Do it yourselfers out there~
