The Quilt I Never Got

My Grandmother.
My Grandmother.

As a child, I used to love going to my Grandma's house. It was always a hub of activity. Either someone was playing the piano and singing or someone was baking or sewing. Usually it was my Grandma doing one or the other.

My Grandma is an exceptional lady. She has always told me that she wants to live until she is 100 years old. Well, I truly believe she is going to make it to 100 and possibly longer. My Grandma is going to be 97 years old this October.

Grandma used to sew a lot of quilts. I remember some them were bright pinks, yellows, purples, greens and blues. They all had a flannel backing and she would tie the quilt with yarn. They were really nice looking quilts. I always wanted one of my Grandma's quilts, always, but for some reason I never got one.

Now, it wasn't because I was a bad grandchild or anything like that. I think it was because I was always overlooked in the family, always. I think it is because I am shy.

I saw quilts being handed to my mother, my sister, my brother, my cousins and even friends of my grandmother. Quilts were given to them as birthday gifts, Christmas presents and even wedding presents. I saw some of these quilts at my moms house, my sisters house, my brothers house, so I am not dreaming or making these quilts up.

I always thought my grandma loved me and I'm sure she does to this day. See, I am the one in my family that takes after her. I sew, I write and I love nature. Everything that she does I do.

Maybe that is the reason I never got a quilt from my grandma because maybe, just maybe, she thought I could make my own quilt. Well, she is right. I can make my own but still, it would have been so nice to have one of my grandma's quilts.

Thanks for your comment, ajcor. Unfortunately my grandma doesn't sew anymore so I know I won't be getting one. However, I will make one for myself someday soon.

maybe your mother will give you one! here's hoping for your sake - but I am sure you will make a truly beautiful one for yourself - my sister-in-law had given me/us a few that she has made and they are lovely....

Do you have a vid of grams anywhere? Could upload it to youtube right easily... otherwise, done well. =)

Thanks!

This makes me sad. I know you will not make the same mistake with your new grandchild. When you make one for the wee one, cut double, and treat yourself.

R Burow, that is a good idea except that I want Patrick to have the "one-of-a-kind" quilt.

Got me thinking about my own Nan, didn't really want to be thinking about my Nan, I guess I don't think of her as often as I should, but she does deserve to be remembered from time to time! Well written, thanks for the read.
