I have seen two different types of woodpeckers here in Kamloops, BC. One is the Northern Flicker and the other is the redheaded woodpecker.

Last summer, a pair of Nothern Flicker woodpeckers made a nest out of a tree in our yard. The one area of the tree that they decided to build the nest in toppled over. They came back and tried building another nest and it too toppled over. I do not know if they actually had any eggs in the nest at all when their branch toppled. I have seen that same pair here this year. They know better than to try to build the nest in the tree, which I am glad of because maybe, just maybe they will have babies and will survive. This pair seems to be a little bit strange though because when they first came back around this year, they were pecking at a steel rod in the yard beside us and they were also pecking at a hydro pole.

The other woodpecker that I have seen in Kamloops is the redheaded woodpecker. The redheaded woodpecker was at the Grassland Park. We were driving up to a lookout at the Grassland Park when we spotted this redheaded woodpecker pecking at a hydro pole. I got out of our van with my camera and took quite a few pictures of him. He kept right on pecking while I took the pictures. He didn't mind me being there in the least.

The Northern Flicker woodpecker doesn't sit straight up and down like the redheaded woodpecker does. It sits like other birds do. The Northern Flicker is kind of a grey coloured bird with a red mark under its chin. The redheaded woodpecker stands straight up and down and is black and white, with a red coloured head. The redheaded woodpecker is a very striking looking bird.

Woodpeckers are really interesting birds to watch. They like to peck with their beaks into trees so that can get at the insects that live there. Woodpeckers do make a lot of noise while pecking.

Woody! =D

Woodpeckers are way cool. There's just something about listening to the rythm of thumps as they drill into a tree.
